Example #1
Two vessels A and B contains spirit and water mixed in the ratio of 7 : 6 and 4 : 3 respectively. These mixture be mixed to get a new mixture containing 600 / 13 % spirit, is?

  1. 10 : 7
  2. 10 : 3
  3. 3 : 11
  4. 5 : 13

Answer: Option (A)
How to Solve
Let, the cost of 1 liter Spirit Rs.1/-.

Spirit in 1 liter mixture of A = 7 / 13 liter,
Cost price of 1 liter mixture of A = Rs.7 /13.

Spirit in 1 liter mixture in B = 4 / 7 liter,
Cost price of 1 liter mixture in B = Rs. 4 / 7.

So, spirit in 1 liter of new mixture is,
= 600 x 1 x 1 / 13 x 100
= 6 / 13 liter (Mean price).

Using the rule of alligation, we have:
Mixture and Alligation

So, the required ratio is
10 / 91 : 1 / 13
= 10 : 7

Example #2
In 400 gm of a mixture there was 30% of rice in it. How much rice should be added to make it 50% in the mixture?

  1. 160 gm
  2. 180 gm
  3. 200 gm
  4. 225 gm

Answer: Option (A)
How to Solve
The existing solution has 30% rice.
So, the other solution has 100% rice,

Formula applied:
Quantity of cheaper / Quantity of dearer = CP of dearer – Mean price / Mean price – CP of cheaper
100 – 50 / 50 – 30
= 50 / 20
= 5 : 2.

So, the two mixtures be added in the ratio of 5 : 2.

Required rice is,
= 400 x 2 / 5
= 160 gm.

Shortcut Tricks
Solution ( Required % value – Present % value ) / ( 100 – Required % value )
400 ( 50 – 30 ) / 100 – 50
= 160 gm.

Example #3
In what ratio stone be mixed with rice so as to gain 40% by selling at cost price?

  1. 1 : 4
  2. 2 : 5
  3. 3 : 5
  4. 4 : 7

Answer: Option (B)
How to Solve
Let, cost price of pure rice is Rs.1/-.
Sell price of mixture is Rs.1/-.
And, % profit = 40%.

Sp, cost price in the mix is,
1 X 100 / 140
= 5 / 7.

Now, by applying alligation formula:
Cost price 1 = 1(rice).
Cost price 2 = 0(stone).
Mean price (mix) = 5 / 7.
( Cost price 1 – Mean price ) : ( Cost price 2 – Mean price )
= 2 / 7 : 5 / 7
= 2 : 5.

So, the ratio between rice and stone to gain 40% Profit is 2 : 5.
