Pipe and Cistern Example 1
In pipe and cisterns when we calculate the pipe related examples we first check the nature that if the pipe is filled up by water or any liquid we clearly say and consider the pipe is plus and when the pipe is vacant we clearly say and consider it as negative, so here we again describe rule of pipe example and also some example is given. This type of problem are given in Quantitative Aptitude which is a very essential paper in banking exam.Under below  given some more example for your better practice.

Formulas of Pipe and Cistern

  • If a pipe can fill a tank in X hours, then, part filled by 1 hours = 1 / X.
  • If a pipe can vacant a tank in Y hours, then, part emptied in 1 hours = 1 / Y.
  • If a pipe can fill a tank in X hours and another pipe can vacant the full tank in Y hours ( where X>Y ), then on opening both the pipes, the net part filled in 1 hours = (1 / X) – (1 / Y).
  • If a pipe can fill a tank in X hours and another pipe can empty the full tank in Y hours ( where Y>X ), then on opening both the pipes, the net part emptied in 1 hours = (1 / Y) – (1 / X).

Example #1
A water reservoir can fill by a tap in 12 hours and a bottom tap can vacant that water reservoir in 18 hours. If the tap of a water reservoir fill and opened simultaneously, then what time will it takes to be filled.

Example #2
Two pipes A and B can fill a water reservoir in 12 hours and 14 hours respectively. While a third pipe C empties the full water reservoir in 30 hours. If all the pipes A, B and C is operate simultaneously, how much time will take be filled the water reservoir?

  1. 8 Hours 12 Minutes
  2. 8 Hours 48 Minutes

Answer: Option (A)
How to Solve
Net part filled by 1 hour
( 1 / 12 + 1 / 14 ) – 1 / 30
= 51 / 420.

Example #3
Two pipes pipe 1 and pipe 2 can fill a water reservoir in 36 hours and 45 hours respectively. If both the pipes are opened simultaneously, how much time will be taken to fill the water reservoir?

  1. 10 Hours
  2. 14 Hours

Answer: Option (D)
How to Solve
Here both pipes are filled so we can easily say it is a positive.
So, at first we calculate the portion it fill in 1 hour.

Pipe 1 + Pipe 2 together filled a water reservoir in 1 hour is
(1 / 36) + (1 / 45)
= 9 / 180
= 1 / 20

Hence, both the pipe, pipe 1 and pipe 2 will fill the water reservoir in 20 hours.

  1. anindita says:

Pipe A can fill a tank in 20 min,Pipe B can empty a tank in 70 min, if both the pipes are open simultaneously than by what time the tank will be filled up.?
please do provide the answer with detailed explanation.

    • satish says:

A filled the tank in 1/20 per mint
b empty the tank in 1/70 per mint
      if both are opened simultaneously

      so (1/20 -1/70)=(7-2)/140

      =5/140 per hr

ans is 140/5 hrs =28 hrs take to fill the tank

    • Lijo Samuelli says:

in 1 min pipe A can fill:-1/20 part.

in 1 min pipeB can fill:-1/70part
if both the pipe are used for filling a tank then in 1min it can ill:-1/20+1/70 part of tank.
therefore both pipe can fill the the tank in 140/9 min.

    • Lijo Samuel says:

in 1 min pipe A can fill:-1/20 part.

in 1 min pipeB can emptyl:-1/70part
if both the pipe are used for filling a tank then in 1min it can ill:-1/20-1/70 part of tank.
therefore both pipe can fill the the tank in 140/5 min.

    • hari says:

      A B
      time 20 70 work LCM(20,70)= 140
      effiency 7 2

since A is inlet take efficency as +ve and B as -ve (out let)
so 140work had to be done with 5efficency (7-2)
      time taken = work /efficncy
      =140/5
      =28 min

    • rakesh riyar says:

      In 1hour tank filled =1/20
      in 1 hour tank empty= 1/70
when both pipe operate then tank filled
      =1/20-1/70Part
      1hour=5/140part

      1hour =1/28part
      1 Part=28min in filled
