Formulas of Pipe and Cistern
- If a pipe can fill a tank in X hours, then, part filled by 1 hours = 1 / X.
- If a pipe can vacant a tank in Y hours, then, part emptied in 1 hours = 1 / Y.
- If a pipe can fill a tank in X hours and another pipe can vacant the full tank in Y hours ( where X>Y ), then on opening both the pipes, the net part filled in 1 hours = (1 / X) – (1 / Y).
- If a pipe can fill a tank in X hours and another pipe can empty the full tank in Y hours ( where Y>X ), then on opening both the pipes, the net part emptied in 1 hours = (1 / Y) – (1 / X).
Example #1
A water reservoir can fill by a tap in 12 hours and a bottom tap can vacant that water reservoir in 18 hours. If the tap of a water reservoir fill and opened simultaneously, then what time will it takes to be filled.

Two pipes A and B can fill a water reservoir in 12 hours and 14 hours respectively. While a third pipe C empties the full water reservoir in 30 hours. If all the pipes A, B and C is operate simultaneously, how much time will take be filled the water reservoir?

( 1 / 12 + 1 / 14 ) – 1 / 30
= 51 / 420.

Two pipes pipe 1 and pipe 2 can fill a water reservoir in 36 hours and 45 hours respectively. If both the pipes are opened simultaneously, how much time will be taken to fill the water reservoir?

Here both pipes are filled so we can easily say it is a positive.
So, at first we calculate the portion it fill in 1 hour.
Pipe 1 + Pipe 2 together filled a water reservoir in 1 hour is
(1 / 36) + (1 / 45)
= 9 / 180
= 1 / 20
Hence, both the pipe, pipe 1 and pipe 2 will fill the water reservoir in 20 hours.

70-20=50

In 1hour tank filled =1/20
in 1 hour tank empty= 1/70
when both pipe operate then tank filled
=1/20-1/70Part
1hour=5/140part
1hour =1/28part
1 Part=28min in filled

If two pipes can fill in 12 hr. One pipe fill 10 hr faster than other. How many hrs second pipe take to fill.
Tank capacity pls?
1/x be the time taken to fill (first pipe)
1/10+x be time taken by second pipe
So, 1/x + 1/x+10=1/12
=2x+10/x2 + 10x = 1/12
=x=20 hrs
wrong answer:
1/x + 1/(x+10) will form quadratic equation and than you have to solve that.
