First of all do a practice set on math of any exam. Choose any twenty math problems and write it down on a page. Solve first ten math problems according to basic math formula. You also need to keep track of the time. After finish write down total time taken by you to solve those ten maths. Now practice our shortcut tricks on speed time and distance and read examples carefully. After this do remaining ten questions and apply shortcut formula on those math problems. Again keep track of the time. The timing will be surely improved this time. But this is not enough. You need more practice to improve your timing more.

Few Important things to Remember

We all know that the most important thing in competitive exams is Mathematics. That doesn’t mean that other sections are not so important. This type of problem are given in Quantitative Aptitude which is a very essential paper in banking exam. Under below given some more example for your better practice.

Basic formula of Speed and Distance

  • Distance = Speed x Time
  • Speed = Distance / Time
  • Time = Distance / Speed

Example #1 – Speed Time and Distance Example 1

A bus covers a certain distance in 18 hours at the speed of 60 km/hr. What would be the average speed of a bike which covers a distance of 270 km more than the bus in the same time?

Advertisement
  1. 62 km/hr
  2. 65 km/hr
  3. 70 km/hr
  4. 75 km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (D)
How to Solve
Distance = 60 x 18 = 1080 km.
Speed = (1080 + 270) / 18 = 75 km/hr.

Example #2 – Speed Time and Distance Example 1

Suresh travel on car and covers 360 km in 8 hours and Ramesh travel on bike and covers 405 km in 9 hours. What would be the sum of there speed?

  1. 90 km/hr
  2. 95 km/hr
  3. 101 km/hr
  4. 105 km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (A)
How to Solve
Speed of Suresh’s car = 360 / 8 = 45 km/hr.
Speed of Ramesh’s bike = 405 / 9 = 45 km/hr.

So, sum of both their speed = ( 45 + 45 ) = 90 km/hr.

Example #3 – Speed Time and Distance Example 1

Amir passes a 1200 meter long road in 4 minutes by car. What would be his speed in km/hr?

  1. 12 km/hr
  2. 15 km/hr
  3. 18 km/hr
  4. 20 km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (C)
How to Solve
Speed = ( 1200 / (4 x 60) ) m / sec
= 5m / sec.

Convert it into Km/hr
5 x 18 / 5
= 18 km/hr.

Example #4 – Speed Time and Distance Example 1

A bullet train covers a certain distance in 40 min. If the train runs at a speed of 45km/hr on an average then the speed at which the train must run to reduce the time of journey to 30 minutes will be?

  1. 50 km/hr
  2. 60 km/hr
  3. 72 km/hr
  4. 80 km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (B)
How to Solve
Time = 40 / 60 = 2 / 3.
Given speed = 45 km/hr.

Distance = Speed x Time
or, Distance = 45 x 2 / 3
or, Distance = 30 km.

Time = 30 / 60
= 1 / 2 hr.

Speed = Distance / Time.
So, the new speed is
30 x 2
= 60 km/hr.

Example #5 – Speed Time and Distance Example 1

Harish travel to a place by car. For the first 160 km he goes at 64 km/hr and the next 160 km at 80 km/hr. What was his average speed?

  1. 63.74 km/hr
  2. 68.23 km/hr
  3. 71.11 km/hr
  4. 75.94 km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (C)
How to Solve
Total time taken by Harish is
(160 / 64) + (160 / 80)
9 / 2 hr.

So, the average speed is
320 x 16 / 81
= 71.11 km/hr.

  1. 10.8 km/hr
  2. 12.4 km/hr
  3. 14.9 km/hr
  4. 17.3 km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (A)
How to Solve
Speed = ( 450 / 150 ) m/sec
= 3 m/sec.

Now convert it into km/hr
3 x 18 / 5
= 10.8 km/hr.

Example #7

A car covers a certain distance in 7 hours at the speed of 73 km/hr. What should be the average speed of bus which travels a distance of 55 km less than the car in the same time?

  1. 52.57 km/hr
  2. 60.34 km/hr
  3. 65.14 km/hr
  4. 69.75 km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (C)
How to Solve
The distance covered by the car = ( 73 x 7 ) = 511 km.

The distance covered by bus is
511 – 55 = 456 km.

So, the average speed of the bus is
456 / 7
= 65.14 km/hr.

Example #8

The speed ratio between two super fast trains is 6 : 8. If the second train runs 600 km in 6 hours, then what would be the speed of the first train?

  1. 59 Km/hr
  2. 66 Km/hr
  3. 72 Km/hr
  4. 75 Km/hr

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (D)
How to Solve
Let, the speed of two trains be 6X and 8X km/hr.

Now, we need to find the value of X,
8X = 600 / 6
8X = 100
X = 100 / 8
X = 12.5.

So, by putting the value of X we get,
( 6 x 12.5 ) km/hr
= 75 Km/hr.
