Answer: Option (A)
How to Solve
P’s 1 day work = 1 / 8
Q’s 1 day work = 1 / 12
R’s 1 day work = 1 / 24
So, together they need,
(1 / 8) + (1 / 12) + (1 / 24)
or, (3 + 2 + 1) / 24
or, 1 / 4
= 4 days.

So, they need 4 days to complete the work if they work together.

Answer: Option (C)
How to Solve
Let, 1 boy’s 1 day’s work = X.
Let, 1 girl’s 1 day’s work = Y.

Then, 4X + 6Y = 1 / 8
And, 3X + 7Y = 1 / 10

By solving of two equations,
We get Y = 1 / 400 and X = 11 / 400.

So, 1 girl’s 1 day’s work = 1 / 400.
Then 10 girl’s 1 day’s work = (1 x 10 / 400) = 1/40.

So, 10 girl will complete the work in 40 days.

Example #3 – Time and Work Math Example

John painted a wall in 3 days of 12 hours each and Paul can do it in 3 days of 8 hours each. How long will they take to do it, working together 12 / 5 hours a day?

  1. 4 Days
  2. 6 Days
  3. 7 Days
  4. 12 Days

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (B)
How to Solve
John finished the work in ( 3 x 12 ) = 36 hours.
Paul finished the work in ( 3 x 8 ) = 24 hours.

So, John’s 1 hour work = 1 / 36
And, Paul’s 1 hour work = 1 / 24
Together their 1 hour work
= ( 1 / 36 ) + ( 1 / 24 )
= 5 / 72 hours.

So, both finished the work in 72 / 5 hours.
Or, ( 72 / 5 ) X ( 5 / 12) = 6 days.

So, they need 6 days to complete the work if they work together.

Example #4 – Time and Work Math Example

Ram and Shyam can do a piece of work in 30 days. They work together in 20 days and then Shyam left. After another 20 days Ram finish the remaining work. In how many days Ram can alone finish the work?

  1. 35 Days
  2. 45 Days
  3. 50 Days
  4. 60 Days

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (D)
How to Solve
Ram and Shyam together 1 day work is 1 / 30.
So, their 20 days work
= ( 1 x 20 / 30 )
= 2 / 3.

Remaining work
= 1 – ( 2 / 3 )
= 1 /3.

Now, 1 / 3 work done by Ram in 20 days.
So, the whole work done by Ram is
20 / (1 / 3)
or, 20 x 3
= 60 days.

Example #6

P and Q can do a piece of work in 45 days and 40 days respectively. They began the work together. But P left after some time and Q finished the remaining work in 23 days. After how many days did P leave?

  1. 5 Days
  2. 7 Days
  3. 9 Days
  4. 11 Days

Answer: Option (C)
How to Solve
Q works alone for 23 days.
So, Work done by Q in 23 days = 23 / 40 work.
So, P + Q do together ( 1 – 23 / 40 ) = 17 / 40.
Then , P + Q do this work in 1 day ( 40 x 45 / 40 + 45 ) = 40 x 45 / 85 days.

So, P + Q together do the work in
= ( 40 x 45 / 85 ) x 17 / 40
= 9 days.

Shortcut Tricks
We can ignore middle steps then perform direct formula
40 x 45 / 40+ 45 ( 40 – 23 / 40 )
= 9 days.

Example #9

P and Q can complete a work in 15 days and 10 days respectively. They began doing the work together. But, after 2 days Q had to leave and P alone complete the remaining work. So, in how many days the whole work was completed?

  1. 7 Days
  2. 10 Days
  3. 12 Days
  4. 15 Days

Show Answer Show How to Solve Open Rough Workspace

Answer: Option (C)
How to Solve
(P + Q)’s 1 days work = ( 1 / 15 ) + ( 1 / 10 )
= 1 / 6.

So, work done by P and Q in 2 days = ( 1/6 x 2)
= 1 / 3.

Then, remaining work is (1 – 1/ 3)
= 2 / 3.

Now, P’s 1 day of work is 1 / 15.
So, remaining 2/3 work will be done by P in (2/3) / (1/15)
or, (2/3) X 15
= 10 days.

Hence, total time taken to finished the work is (10 + 2) = 12 days.

A and B together can do a piece of work in 5 hours,A and C together can do the same piece of in 4 hours,, B and C together can do the same work in 7/2 hours. How many hours A can alone do the same work ?

    • Dhruvansh Panwar says:

      A+B= 1/5,B+C=2/7,C+A=1/4
      2(A+B+C)=1/5+2/7+1/4
      =28+40+35 /140
      =103/140
      A+B+C= 103/280
      A alone can do same work = A+B+C – B+C
      = 103/280 – 2/7
      =103 – 80 / 280
=23/280 days and in hours 280/23 can A alone do the same work…….

  2. Randhir says:

A and B both complete works in 16 days and B and C complete works in 24 days….if A is working 3 more time(3 guna) than C. Than how many days will take A,B and C for this work?? Plz reply a shortrick for this question

      take look this example Let 1 boy’s 1 day’s work = x.
      Let 1 girl’s 1 day’s work = y.

      Then, 4x + 6y = 1 / 8
      3x + 7y = 1 / 10
      by solving of two equations,
      we get y = 1 / 400 and x = 11 / 400
      So, 1 girl’s 1 day’s work = 1 / 400.
      Then 10 girl’s 1 day’s work = (1 x 10 / 400) = 1 / 40.
So 10 girl will complete the work in 40 days.
